LUUMC Bouldering Meet at Caley, Wednesday 3rd October

It’s that time of year again – conditions are stable and the friction is excellent, so we’re holding another bouldering competition at Caley Crag! We’re meeting at the bus stop on Hyde Park Corner, on Wednesday 3rd October at 13:15. The bus stop is on the left-hand side of the road, just before the crossroad of Hyde Park Corner – to get there, simply follow Woodhouse Lane (the main road that runs past the Parkinson Building and the Packhorse) away from the city centre, the bus stop is about ten minutes walk away from the Packhorse. The bus costs about £2.50 for a return ticket, and entry to the competition itself is free. If you own a bouldering pad or can borrow one then bring it along, 'cos you can never have too many pads! It's not going to be a particularly competitive event (although there's always a few people who really get into it... you know who you are!), so if you just want to potter about on some V0s and chill out then you're welcome to come along and check it out.

This time there’s a category especially for people who have never bouldered before or are new to climbing, so don’t worry if you think you’re ‘not good enough’ to come along - it’ll be a great introduction to one of your local crags, and you’ll pick up loads of tips and techniques from others to get your climbing career off to a flying start! And if you think you’re a bit of a wad then there’s an advanced category to enter, so there’s something for absolutely everyone.

See you all on Wednesday!

Intro Evening - Wednesday 26th September

The first social of the year is on Wednesday evening, upstairs in the Packhorse Pub, starting at 9pm. For those of you new to Leeds, the Packhorse is directly opposite the entrance to Civil Engineering on the main road.

Come along to find out about the club, what we get up to and meet loads of like-minded people! You'll be able to ask any questions you may have and also you will be able to sign up for the day trips taking place both days the following weekend.

You will also be able to join the club (£25) at the pub - just speak to any of the committee, who have promised not to spend it on beer!

We hope to see lots of new faces there!

An Evening With Dennis Gray...

Dennis Grey, president of our very own club in the year 1966, is hosting an evening of slides, stories, poetry and climbing songs at the Flux Gallery on Saturdays the 6th and 13th of October. For those of you who haven't heard of him, let me fill you in....

He started climbing at 11 at Ilkley 60 years ago, and I met him the other day training at Henry Price. Respect. He was in the club during the glory years of the 60's when the climbing wall was built, and local standards rocketed. Characters abounded at the time, and the club was very influential in the new route scene. His climbing partners/aquaintances included: Syrett, Livesy, Fawcett, MacIntyre, Dolphin, Brown, Whillans, Beard, Patey, Haston, Austin, Boardman, Ingle, Crew etc etc, and he put up Wombat at Malham among other things.

Suffice to say that this will be a pretty unique chance to hear some stories of days gone by, and if you hadn't already appreciated how important the club has been in the past, you need to come to this! The entrance fee is a fiver, and I am told that "there will be some drink laid on to offset this raid on your pockets".
