British Antarctic Survey speaker event‏

Don't let this post detract your attention from reading the post below which is much more exciting and important, but I thought a few people might be interested in this speaker.
The Wilderness Medical Society are hosting a presentation by Mr Sean Crane who previously worked for the British Antarctic Survey in the Physical Sciences Division for 36 months. He will give an illustrated talk regarding his experiences and information concerning employment opportunities will be available.
It's happening on Thursday 6th December @7.30pm in the ARC (The Student Activity and Resource Centre), located on the 2nd floor of the Union Building. It cost £1 to attend.

Psyche

Hey hey, a week on Monday (the 3rd of December) we are having a very special film screening of the new posing productions film Psyche, and a talk by award winning film maker Alastair Lee (who made it...). This film has so far only been shown at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival, where it won both the Best Adventure Film, and people's choice categories, so it sounds pretty good...
It follows Steve McClure climbing hard sport routes, Andy Kirkpatrick doing mental stuff in Patagonia and Dave Birkett climbing hard trad on Skye, so it's a good mixed bag, and pretty much guaranteed to get you psyched to get out climbing. Cost will be not very much, cheaper for club members of course (but of course..) and it is at 7.30 in the Rupert Beckett Lecture theatre on Monday the 3rd. Buy tickets in the pub this week, or turn up at the door, though if you get tickets at the door you won't be dissappointed if it fills up (which it may well do). Bring all your friends, it should be a pretty non-climber friendly event as well!

Christmas Ceilidh

The Ceilidh (I hope my spelling is close) will be on the last wednesday of term, thats the 5th I think.
-The theme for the evening is Noah's arc, so dress up and come in pairs. Although wear sensible shoes or shoes you can kick off as you may be dancing for hours!
-It will be in the Cardigan centre which is on Cardigan Road.
-Cost of the evening, £10 in the pub next wednesday (the wed before the ceilidh) or £12 on the door.
-Ceilidh will finish about 11 and hopefully they'll be a party to head to afterwards, if not we'll head into town.
-Further details will be up in the near future but for now just clear the evening in your diaries and make sure you buy a ticket off me in the pub next wednesday. Last year was alot of fun although not many people can remember!

Pub Quiz

I hope one and all have dried out from the North Wales trip. Big thanks to everyone who helped clear up the hut, and to the committe who booked the hut, booked the busses, made sure there was gear, took your money etc. Also thanks to the drivers without whom nothing much would happen.
So, we don't have any firm plans trip wise for the rest of the term. Things are getting dark and wetter, and there isn't much point planning trips ahead too much. There are, however, great crags on our doorstep, and plenty of keen partners, so get out there and enjoy it. Here's hoping for some sticky grit on a perfect high pressure day. Fingers crossed people...
Anyhoo, next Wednesday (the 21st) we are having a pub quiz at the Packhorse. It will be one round of general knowledge, and one round of climbing questions-expect everything from the most obvious to the mindbendingly obscure. I absolutely guarentee no one will get full marks on the climbing section. If anyone does, I will buy them a pint. Teams will be of 6 or so, but make sure you spread the climbing knowledge-you'll want a climbing geek or two on your team!
There will be prizes for the winners, which may be beer if I can't think of anything more fun in the meantime.
See you all there,
Sam

What's the plan?

So, for the lucky few, or the lucky many, who have your names on the list, you are in for a treat this weekend. Here's the deal:
Meet outside the Union at 6:30. We will be back late on Sunday night-can't tell what time yet...
Bring the following:

Climbing gear
Walking boots (if possible)
Climbing shoes
Sleeping bag (and a mat if you like)
Food
Booze
WATERPROOFS
Warm clothes good for the mountains. Jeans are normally OK, but are pretty shit if it is wet, so you'll regret it.

The hut we are staying in is a classic climbers hut, fairly basic but pretty comfortable. It has a kitchen with all the essential cooking type stuff and alpine bunks. There's plenty of us going so it will be nice and cosy... Bring food that is easy and quick to cook, as space is limited, and I don't think there's a microwave. It's probably a plan to go twos up on food or something so there's less going on.
Bring waterproofs. It rarely rains in Wales, but it may just do that this weekend, so bring them with you, if it rains we still climb, so if you dont have some you'll get rather wet. If you didn't pay on Wednesday, BRING MONEY, otherwise we can't afford the busses, and we will go bankrupt. Seriously.
See you all tomorrow. Can't wait!

North Wales Trip

Brace yourselves one and all for the upcoming orgy of climbing delght which is the North Wales trip. I'm so excited I can hardly type, but just for you (yes you) I will persevere and let you know what the plan is.

We are going to stay in Bedgelert, nestled in the North of Snowdonia, and close to the MOUNTAINS!! If you have never been climbing there then you are in for a treat.... cracks, slabs, chimneys, solid rock, beautiful scenery, routes of all grades, and guarenteed year-round sunshine. It doesn't get much better than this folks! As usual we will leave on Friday night (the 9th) and return on Sunday night, probably pretty late, I will put up times/details etc in a few days, but for now what you need to know is this: we are signing up for this trip at 9 o'clock on Wednesday night at the Packhorse (as if you need to be told...). Things are going to be ever so slightly different this time round however, for the following reasons:

The climbing in North Wales is different to the trips so far, it is longer, further from the road, and we cannot have more than 2 beginners to each experienced member, nor can we swap partners throughout the day-everyone must be self sufficient in their climbing teams. So, if you want to come, you need to find a partner before you sign up on the trip-at least one of you must be a competant leader. If you have no one to climb with then get on the forums, or talk to people in the club. The committee aren't a guiding service, nor is it our responsibility to organise who is climbing with who-now we're getting on in the year people need to take some responsibility for themselves and their climbing. If you are a total beginner then do not worry, there will be people to take you climbing, but only limited numbers. Sorry if it sounds like we're being harsh, but life is so much easier if people know who they're climbing with in advance.

Also, swapping guidebooks around isn't really an option when people are a couple of miles apart, so it would be great if people got a few more-a good one to get is Noth Wales Rock (the green one) by Ground Up Productions, as it covers the quality from the whole area we are visiting. You can get it from the Leeds wall or from a shop when we get there.

Anyway, enough of that-see you all on Wednesday, and bring money (£25)-this is a popular trip, so no money, definately no trip!!

Expect a message from your gorgeous social secretaries about upcoming social goodness....
