Hey Guys,

Some stuff for this term.

We have four trips this term, one this coming weekend to go to North Scotland winter climbing, a very numbers limited trip. Sign up will be this Wednesday, or get in touch with me, it will cost £60 all in and be from this Friday night to next Monday night. It’s a trip only for those with winter experience. If you are not sure if this is you please ask and someone will advise as best we can.

We also have a weekend trip to the lakes, a day trip to the peaks and a weekend trip to the roaches. More info will come out for this nearer the time.

We have got some socials coming on this term. We’re going Ice skating, playing paintballing against the hikers and don’t forget the weekly social at the packhorse!
We’ve also got some cool tech tops coming out and a photography competition in the works (more next week)

My Brothers and Sisters.

It has been a term, can you believe that, a whole term? We’ve run 8+ trips this semester I hope everyone came on as many as they could. We’ve have a regular crew down to both the depot and the wall training hard. We’ve hit the social scene hard with a last ever viva cuba/libra jolly, an Otley run and countless pack horses. In other words we’ve had a good term!

To round it all up then, a final jolly of epic proportions. The Xmas Celidh. Seriously come to it, I can not explain how much fun dressing up and celidh dancing is (alcohol helps), tickets will be on sale for £10 this Wednesday at the Packhorse and £15 on the door on the night. Get them while they are hot.

Cotsworld are doing a 20% off thing this Thursday again, we’re invited, if you want to buy stuff for you or your family this is a great opportunity.

Next term we have two definite weekend away trips and are hoping to organise day trips as well as the possibility of some Scottish winter. You’ll get updated about them at the beginning of next year.

There was some lost property picked up from the Wales trip, get in touch with Duncan or check out the LUUMC facebook group if you wanna get some goodies – I mean reclaim some gear.

What is up dog?

Anyway, stuff you should know.

For those of you coming on the Tremadog trip, we’re meeting at the union this Friday at 6, bring the standard kit. This means sleeping bag, roll mat, climbing gear, toiletries, plate, knife, fork, warm clothes, waterproofs, more warm clothes, walking boots if you want in case we go up a mountain due to poor weather, beer, money for fish and chip on Friday night, Eric’s cafe and pub. Oh and lycra is apparently mandatory (Happy now Steve?)

Christmas Celidh tickets go on sale this week. £10 in advance for all you can (“responsibly”) drink and plenty of dancing, more details can be found here: http://www.luumc.co.uk/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=749 When I say this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on I’m not lying... But if you come naked you’ll still have a good time, promise.

T-Shirts are still being printed, apparently the special ink derived from rhino horn and whale spleen Sean ordered is taking a little longer to come by than normal due to green peace getting all touchy about whaling in the Antarctic (Go Japan), but they will be with us before Christmas, we’re told.

Evening folks,

Sorry this e-mail comes so close to sign up, the committee’s bean counting machine went on the fritz and Heinz were unable to provide one at such notice.

On a serious note – Tremadog sign up is tomorrow (Wednesday)! There are 40 places and this is all. The cost is £30 for the trip which again covers Saturday night food and both breakfasts (we will leave on Friday night). We’d like you to come down and sign up with your partner. If you do not have a partner we can try and help but this means you might end up climbing with me so not the best plan ever...

We’ll be running a session on multi pitch leading for all those people who need a bit of a guidance or a little refresher

Other things – the Christmas Celidh is coming soon! ( I am so excited I can barely keep it contained) tickets will be £10 for all you can drink, stylish dancing and classy costumes. They will go on sale the following Wednesday so get them while they are hot (Celidh is actually on the 8th )
Bouldering party this Thursday at Sean’s, also a 20% off night the same night at Nevisport.

Next 2 trips

Hey Guys,

Just some info on the two upcoming trips.

This weekend we have a day trip running to Millstone. Millstone while being a very nice crag has only VERY hard routes there, it starts at about VS and then just gets harder. As a result we are aiming this trip at people who can climb this kind of level. Sign up for this trip will be on Wednesday, cost will be around the £5/£10 mark just to cover fuel and transport costs.

The following Wednesday we will be signing up for Tremadog, price to be confirmed but it should be around the £25 mark +/- £5. Tremadog and surrounding areas are multipitch crags. This means that it is harder for people to be supervised while we climb and it is very difficult to teach at the crag. We are therefore asking that if you come along you find a climbing partner before sign up, this is the person who you will climb with all weekend. One of the two of you must be able to lead for obvious reasons and it is a positive if your partner can lead belay. If you are unsure if you meet this standard get in touch with someone from the committee or have a chat with one of us down the Packhorse. Also when it comes to finding a partner the packhorse is a perfect venue to ask around, or if you are afraid of face to face human contact the F-book group or the website forums are a must visit!

If you have never multi-pitched before please don't be put off, we'll do our very best to find someone for you to climb with, everyone's gotta do it for a first tiem right? Even if it hurts.

Hey all,

Your weekly dose of mountaineering updates are here as ever.

First off peak trip, if you got your name down well done, we plan to leave from the union steps at 8:30 on the Saturday – we know that this is early but we want to make the most of the daylight, bring the same set of gear as last trip and don’t forget we’ll be providing the food for everything apart from lunches! We will aim to be back about 7 on Sunday for post trip curry.

Some lost property still from the Northumberland trip, someone left some PJs, a lunchbox, a pair of rock shoes and possibly a pashmina. If you think any of these bits could be yours get in touch.

Stuff ordered from MI is coming in, Sean should be letting you know when and where to pick your gear up from. But if a Sam Smith could get in touch with me that would be great, we don’t have any contact details for you it seems.

Still some spaces left on the first aid courses, details of them can be found on the front page of the website and also winter Conville courses are available, these teach basic winter skills for a very small amount of money and are worth trying to get on to, entry for applications closes on the 7th so if you’re interested get your skates on. More details available on the forums or front page of website.

Conville Courses

The Conville Trust are again offering subsidised winter courses in Scotland, and the application deadline has been extended to 7th November.

If you're thinking of getting out this winter, this course is well worth applying for. It teaches you all the basics of looking after yourself in the winter mountains, and at £70 for 2 days, its a bargain!

"This winter the Trust is offering subsidised winter training courses based in the Cairngorms. These courses are specially designed to give a sound introduction to the techniques needed for moving on snow and ice - both in Britain in winter and in the Alps. The course will include use of crampons and ice axes, belaying and rope work, avalanche assessment and other topics related to Winter Mountains.

Each course place costs approximately £150, yet trainees are only charged £70. The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust provides approximately £3000 to subsidise these courses and Plas y Brenin absorbs the costs associated with delivering the courses along with the BMC who also contribute financially."

I have mentioned these to a number of people, if you are interested in alpine or scotish mountaineering these are a must. Get involved.

Hello everyone!

Just a few pieces of info to pass on!

Firstly the Peak trip weekend will be signing up this Wednesday. The cost will be £20. Further details can be found on the website! Hopefully the sign up process will be a lot less painful than last time!

After the sign up we’re going down to the Fav for some drinks, make sure you get involved.

After the madness of the last few weeks there is less to tell you about, however there are still some places on the first aid course available so if you are interested get in touch. Also on the 8th of December we have our Xmas Celidh, just telling you now so you can keep that date free. It seriously is the best night of the year – dancing, all you can drink booze and silly games! I’ll remind you enarer the time so don’t panic!

Annual Alumni Lecture about developing his interest in climbing when he was at Leeds and his exploits and adventures as a mountain guide on some of the world's toughest mountain ranges since graduating.

Accident on the Otley Run :(

Matt Harding fell over last night and severed some tendons and nerves in his hand last night on some broken glass at Viva Cuba. He is currently in the Leeds General Infirmary, Ward 49, Clarendon wing. He'll be having surgery tomorrow some time and will probably be out on Saturday some time. He would appreciate visitors/phone calls to cheer him up – his hospital phone number is 07005764232 (mobile number 07814 727231), visiting hours are 3-4pm and 6-8pm. Also he would like to know what actually happened, as a combination of alcohol, shock and loss of a surprising amount of blood mean his memory of the event is a bit hazy.

How’s it going, this is just an info-mail, letting you know what is going on in the hectic world of LUUMC!

Ok firstly and most importantly this Wednesday at 3pm we will be commencing our Otley run, the theme is anything which begins with the letter L, U, U, M or C. Anything at all, can’t be bother come as Casual Wear, want to go really exotic and have too much time to kill come as Leonardo da Vinci flying machine... We will also be doing it roped up so bring a belt to get connected. If you can’t make three because you have lectures – which as a sensible club we would never suggest you miss – come down and join in when you can, I’ll be there all night so you can call me (07879674137) or any of the committee at www.luumc.co.uk/committee.php

Next on Thursday night Jenny Lines our great outdoor rep has organised a 20% off night at Cotsworld, this is a great chance to pick up any extra bits of kit you need before Northumberland. To get this discount you’ll need an outdoors’ club membership card (they’ll cost 50p) and will be being sold by committee members on the night. These cards will also entitle you to a 15% discount off all year round at both Cotsworld and Nevisport.

Next the harness and helmet deal is still going till next Thursday (22nd) This is an amazing deal and will save anyone who needs this gear a tonne of money. Northumberland trip

Hello!

This e-mail contains info for those of you going on the Northumberland trip; if you are not then I am sorry for unnecessarily filling up your inboxes!

So the general plan is:

This Friday we will meet at 6 on the union steps, we will load the gear into the van and then set off for Northumberland. For those of you who have volunteered to drive, one of us will be in touch in the next few days.

We will stop off on the way up North to get fish and chips, probably in Morpeth, so if you want food on Friday night either bring cash or eat before we leave!

On Saturday morning we will provide breakfast – Cereal of various descriptions and then we’ll go off to a crag climbing, don’t worry if you are a novice, or need some guidance we’ll make sure you’re with someone able to offer this.

Saturday night the committee will be cooking (God have mercy) we’re not sure what yet but there will be plenty and there will be a vegetarian option. There is also a pub down the road which does takeaway and beer so if you fancy that feel free. There will also be some games arranged on Saturday night which should keep as all entertained (No pressure Lou)

Sunday will be climbing again and then a trip back to Leeds for a curry at Nazam’s Hopefully be back around 7, but may be later. so don’t make dinner plans.

Finally what to bring:

Climbing gear (Don’t worry if we’re lending it to you we’ll bring it in the van)

Sleeping bag + Roll Mat (Roll mat is not essential just comfy)

Suitable outdoor clothes and footwear (I.e. sturdy trainers or walking boots and something other than jeans)

Warm clothes / Waterproof

Nibbles / Food for lunch each day

Alcohol

Cash for Fish and chips + Curry (Optional)

Plastic plate + Bowl + Eating implement

Toiletries (The hut has a sink and a toilet, no showers)

Right, firstly I hope everyone enjoyed the old bouldering party last night, I know I certainly did a bit too much.

So firstly first aid courses, these are run by the bloke who runs them for Plas Y Brenin so they are the best courses of their type in the country. They are based around actuall first aid with stuff like sticks and gaffer tape, so its brilliant relavent training. The certificate lasts for 3 years.

The courses are 21st-22nd Nov, 5th Dec - Mountain first aid (£100 pp - Deposit £30) 3 day certificated emergency care course for anyone getting out into the hills. The first weekend will, again, be based at the university and the third day (a Saturday) will be on location so bring your warm clothes! this is a brilliant price as to do the same course run by the same bloke would normally cost 225 quid. Anyone intrested get hold of me ( Nichols ) the deposits need to be in by next Friday at the latest.

Secondly 20% Discount Night!!
Next Thursday, 15th October, 5pm to 8pm we've got a 20% discount gear night at Cotswold Outdoor's brand new shop in the city centre, there will be free boot fitting. This is a good shop for general outdoors clothes. However if you are waiting to buy harnesses, shoes, equipment etc you will probably be better off waiting for the mountain intelligence sales night which is on Thursday the 22nd from 6pm to 8pm.

Thirdly - for all those on the trip this Sunday to Birchen meet outside the union on the steps at 9am. we should be going for a curry at the Nazams (cue music) in the evening after.

Hey guys,

The leviathan which is LUUMC is lumbering on and as such we’ve got some news to share with you. (Quite a lot of news actually).

First off is the sign up for two trips this Wednesday.

First trip is for Birchem edge. It’s going to be a day trip run next Sunday, it’ll cost £5 and be on a first come first serve basis. Sign up will be at the packhorse. Birchem is a great crag with a load of classic climbs as well as some easy ones for those of you keen to get a first lead in before Northumberland.

Which leads me neatly on to our second trip, Northumberland. Sign up will also be this Wednesday at 9pm in the packhorse. We are driving up to a little hut in the village of Lucker and then spending our time on the sandstone crags of Northumberland. There should be plenty of spaces on this trip and it’s a great weekend away. Both beginners and more experienced members are encouraged to come and the “socialising” on the Saturday night ensures that everyone will have a good time.

The cost of the trip will be £25 which includes all transport, all accommodation, Saturday and Sunday breakfast and Saturday tea. So the only food you have to bring is stuff to make pack ups (Or for you none Yorkshires packed lunches) and some money for the fish and chip stop on Friday night. To be guaranteed a place on this trip you must be a member of the club, this can be done easily at: http://www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/clubsandsocieties/outdoor/mountaineering/ you also need to pay the full £25 during sign up – no cash, no place. Simples.

If you are having trouble signing up to the club, get in touch with one of the committee and we’ll guide you through the process.

The reason both trips are being signed up this Wednesday night is because we are having our Otley run the following Wednesday (14th October). The theme for this is anything beginning with the letter L, U,U, M or C. Also make sure you wear a belt with your outfit.

Andy Cave!

This term is crammed full of events and to add one more to the list our outdoors rep would like to bring this to your attention!

Andy Cave Lecture, 21st October
Andy Cave is on tour this autumn and will be speaking in Barnsley on 21st October, 7.30pm. I've negotiated a bit of a discount for the outdoors clubs, bringing tickets down to £10 each. For transport we'll hopefully be able to get enough people willing to drive, otherwise the train is £4.30 return with a railcard.

For those of you that are not sure who Mr Cave is...

Andy Cave has over twenty years of alpine climbing experience.

He is a qualified UIAGM mountain guide and author of two books; Learning to Breathe, which received the prize for best Adventure travel book at the 2005 Banff Mountain Book Festival, and the sequel Thin White Line that was published in early 2008 and contains more climbing memoirs.

Aged just 20, Andy became one of the youngest mountaineers at that time to climb the infamous North Face of the Eiger, an achievement made all the more remarkable as just 4 years earlier Andy was working 3000 feet underground at Grimethorpe Colliery in South Yorkshire. Also significant was a repeat of Divine Providence, one of the most difficult Alpine routes at the time. Aged 21, Andy cashed in his miners' pension and went to Asia for five months with Joe Simpson, beginning his quest to seek out new routes and dedicate his life to mountaineering.

Andy made the first ascent of the North Face of Changabang in the Garwhal Himalaya of India with Brendan Murphy. Unfortunately Murphy was hit by an avalanche and swept off the face to his death on the descent.

Along with Sir Chris Bonington, Andy is a patron of The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT). The JCMT was created in 1982 in memory of Jonathan Conville, who died in 1979 during a winter ascent of the Matterhorn. The Trust's aims are to encourage and assist individuals to train for and pursue outdoor adventure in the spirit that Jonathan followed during his life."

Sounds like an awesome guy, I know I will be going, hope you do too!

Hey Guys,

Firstly thanks to all thsoe who came on the trip to Brimham this weekend, we had some stunning weather and a great atmosphere, top stuff.

Next thing of note is our intro meet and greet this Wednesday at the packhorse, kicks off at 9pm. There will be a breif - and we really mean brief - talk from the committee about what's going on over the enxt term and a chance to be a bit social. There will also be the sign up for next weekend's trip - destination TBC, but bring a fiver along if you want in!

The other thing to mention is the sign up for the club is still open at: The union website. You'll need to sign up before you can come on any of the weekends away, so don't delay

WOOP! Climbing trip this Saturday :)

This Saturday we are going climbing at Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire. We are signing up for the trip in the Packhorse pub at 9pm this Wednesday. The cost will be £5, which covers fuel costs and the minibus hire. If you would like to come on the trip then come to the pub - payment will be 100% cash on Wednesday night, if you don't pay then you don't get a place (we will refund if we need to cancel the trip - if you decide to cancel and we have a reserve person wanting to go then let us know by 9pm on Friday night and you will be refunded).

We will be meeting at 9am on Saturday Morning, on the UNION building steps.

If anyone wanting to come has a car that they can drive to the crag in, or if you are an experienced lead climber able to climb independently, then come down to the pub and let us know ASAP on Wednesday, and we'll organise the trip around the numbers of people we have that are able to lead/drive. Don't worry, there will still be lots of room for novice climbers that the committee will teach to climb :)

Also, a reminder to people that you can sign-up online right now! Details are on the blog post below this one. Cost is £25, but will go up to £30 on Friday at midnight, so be quick!

We have had some people asking whether they can come on a trip to try it out without having to join. The answer is YES, but you can only come on ONE trip before we need you to pay membership, and after this Saturday the membership fee will be £30 instead of £25, so it's much better if you join now really.

If you have any more questions, then we will be at the Sports Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday 10am to 4pm, so come on down and say hi!

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted on here! Anyway, there's lots of exciting things to announce so i'll try and be brief.

First of all, hello to everyone I met at the Fair today. If you go to the Forums tab on your left, and go into the 'General chit-chat' section, I will put several topics up that will be of particular interest to yourselves, and indeed other members. To keep all this important stuff separate from the other topics, i'll start them with the words NEW INFO...
