Hey everyone, just to let you know the details for the Ceilidh:

Wednesday 3rd December (that's in 2 days' time!)
Starts: 7.30pm
At: Cardigan Road Community Centre
Entry: £10 (pay on door)
Theme: Toybox

The first band set will be at 8, and at 11pm we'll be moving to Duncan's house for the afterparty. There will be plenty of booze (included in ticket price) and a few nibbles, but not huge amounts of food so eat beforehand.

Hello,

If you want some lycra ideas check out will and dave on the forum - its savage!
If anyone missed the idea, were trying to get as many people as possible climbing in tight and bright clothes in wales.

I also forgot to say bring a bowl rather than a plate to tremadog - well be eating sloppy things! i presume no-one is a veggo as I havn’t heard from anyone.

If you're driving and want to know where it is, here’s the huts website and a map.

Our annual christmas caleigh is being held next wednesday (3rd Dec) at cardigan road community centre. We've hired a proper caleigh band accompanied by the comedy caller to get people dancing and explain the dances! The cost will be £10 each and well provide loads of booze will be provided too. The theme is 'toybox'. It is always a hilarious night so make sure you get involved. Afterwards we'll be heading off to someones house for a house party.

Were selling tickets for the caleigh tonight, please get them tonight so we have an idea of numbers and can buy the booze!

Lastly I have bag loads of lost property kicking about in my house. If anyone has lost anything let me know, I’ll bring some stuff to the pub tonight.

Evenin all, heres a round up of this weeks shinanigens!

To start, heres everything needed to be known about tremadog next weekend. Lycra, lycra, lycra - dave, will and tom have started the ball rolling with a cracking threesome of lycra tights, im gona be getting mine tomorrow, hope everyone else is going to follow suit. I expect them to be worn for travelling aswell! Brilliant...

Were meeting at 5 on friday outside the union. If you cant leave that early email me and we can sort out some later car departures. We'll be cooking (you'll be pleased to hear no porridge this time) but there wont be any plates/cutlery/mugs/cuddly toys/anything so make sure you bring them. Also if anyone is vegetarian let me know asap as at present i dont know about you.

Be sure to bring food for lunches, sleeping bags (the hut has alpine style bunks so you wont need mats), climbing stuff and WATERPROOFS - its wales and its the end of november - enough said. If you have walking boots bring them aswell as we may get out into the mountains if the weathers bad.

If you havnt yet paid for the trip (£25) make sure you pay on wednesday - if you havnt nd we dont know your coming we'll cut down the car spaces. If you are driving and havnt filled out the car registration form please contact dave asap.

For the rest of the week - wall on wednesday, contact me if you'll want to borrow kit and ill make sure some gets down there.

Social will be at the packhorse form 9 and then were meeting up with the kayakers for a cheeky hifi session at 11.

Just a quicky...

Firstly sign up tomorrow for tremadog. Cost will be £25 for food, transport and accommodation. Also, were trying to get a database of next of kin details for everyone coming on club trips. If your coming tomorrow can you make sure you fill in the form. If not could you email mail@luumc.co.uk with next of kin details please.

Secondly, if your driving we need you to fill in a car registration form for the union tomorrow. We'll also need a photocopy of your driving licence, insurance and MOT certificate if you havnt given this to us already. Either bring it tomorrow or take it to the arc before the trip. Sorry, I know its ball ache but the union have to have it!

Tomorrows social will end up at the faversham after the packhorse for a jagermeister-tastic evening. There is also a lecture by Steph Davis at 7.30 in mountain intelligence in towm, apparently she will be "presenting an evening of slis, video and thoughts on climbing (and soloing!) base jumping and sky diving". It should be sweet so get down there if you can!

The hoodies have been ordered and will be on their way shortly, looking forward to the seeing the mass branding!

Nevisport Discount Night

Hallo all,

Many of you are getting quite into this climbing malarkey now (its fun is it not?) so are looking at buying your own gear. Whether you're looking for your first harness, the start of your rack or any other shiny new stuff to coo over then the upcoming event at Nevisport could be for you.

Nevisport are holding a discount night on the 20th November for all the members of the Leeds Uni and Leeds Met climbing clubs. I think there may also be the Leeds Mountaineers and some walkers there too. The discount available will be 20% of full price products (excluding books, maps & GPS equipment) so there's bound to be some bargains there!

I believe that the discount will apply throughout the day but there will also be late opening. I will post up on the forum when I get confirmation about what times the event is taking place.

Gooood evening,

So, news for this week...

Sign up for the tremadog trip will be on Wednesday at the packhorse from 9. Most of the climbing in North Wales is multipitch (ie longer routes that are climbed in multiple stages). Although this does not necessarily mean the climbing is harder, the commitment of the climbing increases slightly. The main difference is that it is much harder to retreat off a route and involves multiple abseils and probably leaving gear! For these reasons and to make sure everyone gets the most out of the weekend we will be signing up in climbing pairs.

So, find your self an experienced climber to climb with (or someone who you feel comfortable climbing with if your a leader) and sign up on wednesday in the packhorse as usual. Remember, this doesnt have to be the same person you have climbed with on previous trips and partners may swap and change over the 2 days we will have climbing. It just makes logistics and safety a whole lot easier.

If you've never been to Tremadog, the hut is literally 2 mins walk from the base of the rock opposite a nice little cafe. About as close to the crag as you can get, making it ideal for doing your own thing. We'll probably also have a minibus driving into the mountains if there is demand.

Search the forums and photos on www.ukclimbing.com for more info on the crag and what is available locally. Also, "North Wales Rock" is a well worth while guide-book purchase and will be very usefull over the weekend and is available from the Leeds Wall or other gear shops in town.

Otherwise this week we'll have the Wednesday session as usual. I'll probably be cycling down with some harnesses. Let Will know if you want a rope.

The Thursday sessions have now finished due to the wall closure.

A bit of a quieter week!

Hello, I hope everyone has recovered after the weekend. On Saturday I think about 9 or 10 people did their first leads! If you did, well done but make sure you get plenty of seconding experience and continued gear placement practice with another leader on subsequent trips before pushing yourself. I was loving the local banter we got in the pub on the Saturday night, I was feeling quite special for most of Sunday!

This week is a bit of a quieter week on our part. Tomorrow (Tuesday) i’m going to henry price for a cheeky boulder at about 5 if anyone fancies joining me. If you havn’t before been its a rather bisar experience and involves traversing round the back wall of the henry price halls (by the business school) and getting quite alot of funny looks from the residents!

I cant go to the wall on Wednesday so if you want to borrow a rope/harnesses contact will before Wednesday as he’s away too. If you want to go down im sure there will be plenty of club members down there to pair up with.

Wednesdays social is at the packhorse at 9 as usual. Afterwards well be heading down to wire for roots revival, I hear some live percussion will be appearing which sounds sweet.

Thursday is the last session at the uni wall before it closes down. Same old, 7-9.

Bit of advanced notice on things coming up. The north wales trip is on the 28th – 30th November, sign up will be on the 19th. The annual christmas celeigh will be on the 3rd December. The theme will be ‘toybox’ so get your thinking caps on (think any kids toy – snakes and ladders, lego, Barbie and ken, action man, mr men, disney characters etc etc.)

Evening all. Hope everyone had a good weekend, it was my first climbingless weekend since freshers week! Thanks to everyone that came and helped at onsight on Friday, it was a big success.

Right, a few normal things, Wednesday wall session – if you want to go to the wall and don’t know where you’re going give me a ring and we can head down together from about 2. If you want to borrow a rope contact will. use the forums if you want to meet people to walk down with.

Wednesday night is indeed bonfire night so were gona meet at 7 outside the library pub to go and watch the fireworks before heading to the packhorse. After the packhorse we’ll be doing some further drinking in the dry dock. Hopefully this time they’ll serve us!

Thursday is the penultimate uni wall session before it closes. Anyone can come down, particularly good if you want to start leading indoors, learn to build anchors, or indeed if you have never climbed before.

The peak district trip... We’re short on transport at the moment so if anyone else can drive please please let dave know asap, otherwise we may be walking. If you havn’t paid yet, please pay on Wednesday night. We’ll be leaving at 9 prompt on Saturday morning, returning Sunday evening and going for the usual curry. We’re gona cook up for Saturday night and Sunday morning, bring food for lunches. Also remember sleeping bag and sleeping mat (i don’t think well have the luxury of gym mats this time!) and of course, warm clothes. There is a pub and probably no cash machine in the village, so a bit of cash may come in handy.

Finally, Claire wanted me to pass on this message...
“I just want to say thanks to everyone that helped me in my accident. i was lucky to have so many people who knew what to do. You made a scary experience not half as scary! Im back in Leeds now and walking on crutches, taking it easy, but im pretty much house bound so if anyone is bored and wants to watch a film, play poker etc. then let me no!

Peak Trip Update

The hut for the peak trip is now full at capacity with thirty people signed up. However, the guy who owns it is happy for us to camp in his field, at the same price per head. Next weekend we are not running an official trip. The following trip however is our brand spanking new trip to the peak district. We'll be leaving leeds on SATURDAY morning at 9am. Saturday night we'll staying in a scout hut in Chinley, where hopefully we can get a camp fire going. Then well have another day climbing on sunday before returning to leeds on sunday night. I'm hoping the trip will be a bit more chilled after northumberland, places will be slightly more limited so make sure you sign up this week.

The trip is for all abilities, however there will be an emphasis on looking at gear placement and anchor building for those you want to. Cost will be £20(ish - we will do a costing by wednesday) and will again include breakfast and diner. Please pay when you sign up on wednesday. If you have a car and want to come please contact dave before wednesday!

On friday we are presenting the new film "ONSIGHT", including a talk by the director. Were donating all profits to the Great North Air Ambulance and is going to be a brilliant evening, see below for details!

If you have not paid for the Northumberland or Crookrise trips yet please pay on Wednesday - Duncan has you on his 'blacklist' and will come chasing!!!

We'll be going to the wall as usual on wednesday afternoon. If your walking down you can meet at 2, however im not sure if any of the comittee are walking down so just leave as and when. I will be down at about 3 and will bring some harnesses, however if you want to borrow a club rope contact Will.

Hey everyone, this is fairly important:

The social this week (29th) is NOT in the Packhorse! It's been booked out for a reggae night. It will instead be in THE SKYRACK.

The Skyrack should be familiar to all of you that did the Otley Run (if you can remember it) - it's further up in Headingley, if you head to the hyde park pub from the packhorse and keep going, you can't miss it. It's opposite the Oak.

Starting at 9pm as usual, we'll try and bag a fair amount of chairs for people and hope it's not too busy!

HOODIES

The design for the hoodies will be: the LUUMC logo on the front (small, on the left hand side) and this design on the back: (the background colour will be the colour of the hoody)
They are available in black, bottle green (about the green of the background here), burgundy or navy. (If you don't like any of these there are other colours, but these will look best with the design.) Sizes S-XXL (be aware that they come up smallish, so maybe order a size up).

SPECIAL EVENT: "On Sight" film night. Friday 7-9pm.

First off people, i want to say a big thankyou to everyone for such an amazing weekend - truly memorable. How wrong can the weather man be? Pissed it down in leeds most of the weekend apparently, it was great to see everyone sticking at it despite stupidly strong wind... after saturday night it was rediculous the extra space left in the van for the way home - god knows how much alcohol we all got through! An extra big thank you goes out to all the leaders and drivers who made it all possible. Here's looking forward to the next weekend trip - The Peak District, 8/9th November - another chance to lead your first routes and learn some more stuff outside!

Moving on, i hope to see you all in the Riley Smith Hall in the Union on friday night, 7pm, for the On Sight screening and directors lecture. It is the new benchmark film, recently released, that climbers and non-climbers will enjoy... an insight into hardcore rock climbing, should be interesting and gripping for everyone. Check out the facebook page for more info (search "On Sight + The Making Of"). So spread the word, bring your friends, it should be over by 9pm so plenty of time for Halloween celebrations after. Tickets are £5 for members, £6 for everyone else. All profits will be donated to Northumberland Air Ambulance as a thankyou for their efforts this weekend - Claire should be home soon and no doubt will be back on the rock in no time at all.

Await news from Kat on this wednesdays social. There is a reggae night going on in the packhorse so we have to make alternative arrangements but i'll have advance tickets for On Sight available and we'll be announcing various light hearted awards for this weekends efforts! Dont miss out...

This week - Otley run and Northumberland

I hope everyone that came to crookrise has recovered from the rather breezy day we had - especially good effort to those who spent all afternoon in the pub!

So...this week - The otley run will replace wednesdays wall session and packhorse meet. For those who havn't done an otley run before, it is a lovely big long pub crawl, starting the other side of Headingley and finishing in town. We're gona attempt to do it tied together on a rope and dressed in green. Meet at Woodies ale house at about 2.30, were going to be leaving at 3pm prompt! If you can't make it for then, give someone on the comittee a ring when you on your way and we'll tell you exactly where we are...hopefully.

Thursday we have the usual uni wall session. Anyone can attend, although the session is particularly good if you want to learn to belay, lead, build anchors etc. If you are coming to Northumberland and have never climbed before it is highly recommended that you come along on thursday to learn the basics so we can make the most of our time outside!

Northumberland - The much awaited first weekend trip is upon us! If you havnt signed up, joined or paid yet email me or ruth asap. Dont give us money on wednesday, well lose it or spend it! Can we please have all monday paid up by Thursdays wall session at the latest.

Were meeting outside the union at 6pm, if your late let us know so we dont leave without you! We should be back around 8/9ish on sunday and will be going for the usual curry back in Leeds.

Stuff to bring -
Sleeping bag (and mat if you have one) - were sleeping on a village hall floor
Food/snacks - were providing bacon butties for breaky nd a spag bol for saturday tea (obv including vegi alternatives). Bring food for lunches and snacks.
Warm clothes/waterproofs - Those that went to crookrise will tell you, it gets cold, and it wasnt even raining, bring too many clothes!
Booze - Whatever your tipple is, drink it in the hall, its cheap.
Money - Well be stopping for chish nd fips on the way on friday and there is a pub in the village that were staying.
Climbing stuff - obviously, were going climbing.

ON SIGHT FILM NIGHT - FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER, 7PM

Now hear is something im really really excited about:

The climbers in this film aren't necessarily the strongest but they have the biggest kahooners(!); willing to take a 30 foot fall for the ultimate on sight ascent."

"Alastair Lee has arguably produced the best British climbing film of the year for 3 years in a row. His latest offering, On Sight, is likely to be one of, if not the, best British climbing films of all time. It focuses on the very heart of what makes British climbing and climbers so unique: our ethics for pure on-sight climbing - no pre-practice, no bolts, the real thing!"

Last year he came to screen and talk about Psyche, in the Rupert Becket lecture theatre, as this venue received mixed reactions from the public i have moved this years event to the Riley Smith Hall in the Union and hired out a 14ft * 9ft rear projection screen with profesisonal sound set up for the event - as close to cinema as you can get. The film received its premier in Sheffield last night and went down a storm (check out ukclimbing.com for more info).

This is going to be an event for the whole leeds climbing community and a chance to put LUUMC back on the map, Benard Newman is intending to cover the event for Climber Magazine. It would be great to see the whole club down there... this really is your chance to see abit of history; see and hear about the new benchmark in British climbing films.

See the posters around the union for more details (shortly). Tickets are availabe now at a price of £5 each. Any time the club meets, i will have tickets for sale. Alternativly, as of today, tickets will be available from the ARC reception desk.

Friday 31st October (Halloween), 7-9pm in the Union... you will have time to go out / house parties / what ever afterwards. Hopefully someone in the club will have a wee get together after wards...

Who wants some climbing equipment?

Hey people, heres news for some of you and a reminder for the rest.

The club will be placing a bulk order for equipment from the leeds wall next week, with a discount of 15%. The idea of which is to have some shiney, spangley new kit to play with once we get to northumberland...

So, if you would like anything - be it a helmet, chalk bag, belay device, rope, harness, trad climbing kit, shoes or what ever; please email me. My address is on the committee page of the website. BUT.. if you want a harness i need to know the exact model and size you want. Some of you expressed interest in the pub regarding harnesses and i discussed options with you - this still applies to you as i need your size!

As a note regarding shoes i would advise you to try on numerous pairs, talk to the shop staff and find the right pair for you. Sportiva or 5 10 come highly recommended from me. Out of courtesy for the assistance it would be polite for you to buy your shoes independenly when you try them on. Ultimate Outdoors (down from H&M on Briggate) have a 1/2 decent range currently reduced in price where as the Leeds Wall also have plenty reduced and a wider selection.

As a rough guide on prices:

Basic yet comfy harness from Black Diamond = £40
Single rope (a bog standard rope suitable for indoors and outside) = £1.50/metre (50m recommended)
Belay device complete with screw gate = £15
Decent pair of beginner shoes = £60 (always consider the reduced price ones they have... )
Chalk Bag and Ball = £12

Get all these and you are well set up - remember this kit will last you a long time if you look after it, it is an investment which is well worth making whilst you have the cash. Talk to Will, the gear sec for precise recommendations and advice on care and maintenance of equipment.

The deadline for me receiving requests is sunday evening. I need the email address / phone number of each person interested. I will contact each of you individually with a total price on monday or tuesday. It is imperative that you bring the money to the pub on wedneaday or arrange to meet any member of the committee in uni so that we can get it sorted in time for Northumberland! No money by Wednesday pm... no kit. Simple as.

Leeds wall

Hi, I've just got a couple of things to remember when going to the leeds wall.

Normally you have to do a belay test with the wall staff to prove that you can tie in and belay safely before using the wall. If you are not confident doing this at the moment we (as registered members of the wall) can sign you in as a guest. However if you are a guest you are not allowed to belay people unless you are under the supervision of a member. This is a rule that we have to comply with, otherwise we will get into serious trouble with the wall staff so please dont do it. Secondly please try and be as considerate to the staff and other climbers as possible especially through leaving belongings and equipment tidy.

If you've got any problems when we're down there, come and ask me.

Evening all, hope a good weekend was had by all.

Wednesday - start as usual goin down to the leeds climbing wall, meet outside the union at 2, ill be cycling down and hopefully well have some walkers too. Well take down a few ropes and harnesses.

The social at the packhorse from 9 is an important one for signing up (including paying) for the upcoming outdoor trips. The venue for our day trip on sunday 19th is yet to be decided but we'll know by wednesday. Cost will be a fiver. Were also doing the sign up for the weekend trip to Northumberland on the 24th - 26th. It should be an awesome weekend and a really good way to bond with fellow club members and to get climbing. The cost will be £30 and will include transport, accomodation, breakfast on saturday and sunday and evening meal on saturday.

After the packhorse well be heading down to the fav.

Thursday - last week it was great to see some people doing their first leads indoors. If youre interested in starting to lead indoors or want some more practice with us about, come to the uni wall from 7, we'll bring along some ropes and harnesses. Sorry about the price, im still in constant battles with the sports center!

For the day trip on sunday (remember the clocks go back!) meet us at 9.15 outside the union. Remember to bring warm clothes and waterproofs, food and climbing gear of youve got it.

Thanks for a corker of a day yesterday at brimham, sorry we didn’t get to take out as many people as we’d hoped but the weather was infinitely better!

Right, this week...again on Wednesday were going to the leeds wall. If you’ve been before or feel you’re ready to take a belay test (i.e. can tie in and belay) were meeting at 2 outside the union. Sean will be walking and I will be cycling if you don’t know how to get there (its a semi-mission).

On Wednesday night were meeting at the Packhorse pub from about 9 (where people can sign up etc) and then heading down to wire for Sam and Caitlin’s Roots Revival night. Its £3.50 before 11, £5 after so we plan to get there early.
On Thursday night we have our beginners session at the uni sports center wall from 7-9. Last week it was free so fingers crossed.

Next weekend we are thinking about having a more advanced trip. This will be weather dependant and less informal than normal trips (i.e. up to people to sort out car spaces etc.). Keep an eye on the forums for more info if you’re keen.

Due to limited car spaces weve had to cut the trip down a little tomorrow. Therefore we can only take the people on the following list, this was done on a first come first serve basis from the list. Rescheduled trip - now on sunday 5th

Hey everybody, sorry to mess you around but we have some good news... it looks like the rain should pass on saturday leaving a fine day for sunday - so we have rescheduled this weekends trip.

Meet outside the union 9am on sunday morning. We will pair all you beginners up with an experienced climber as worked so well last saturday at stanage. If you are on the mailing list expect an email from simon with more details.

If you signed up but now cant make it this sunday for what ever reason PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL so we can work out exact numbers. The precise venue may change depending on how much rain we get, either way im sure we will have a fun filled day. Dont forget to being a couple of coins for a pub stop on the way home.
